Question: What kind of computer do I need?

Answer:

PC - Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
MAC - Intel Processor

Question: What kind of camera do I need?

Answer: Most built-in or external webcams work just fine, but we recommend a  Logitech Webcam Pro 9000.  This camera has amazing 720P quality and also works well under a wide range of lighting conditions.

Question: How much bandwidth does it need?

Answer: For home office users a typical DSL or cable modem service works well.  We recommend 500K for the up stream (Although 250K will work).  The downstream requirement is somewhat dependant on the number of participants in the conference.  More participants require more bandwidth with it typically consuming a maximum of 1,500 to 2,000 K.

On the corporate side, up and down speeds are usually not separated so a good rule of thumb is to provision for 2,000 K per user.

Note:  These numbers are based on the assumption that a service provider, such as Soltrite, is provisioning the service.  For companies that own and host their own Vidyo equipment an additional bandwidth component is required.  In addition to what is outlined above, for every port/vidyo line the common practice is to provision for 3,000 K.  Therefore, a 20 vidyo line system will require 60 meg of bandwidth to accomdate peak traffice of all ports being used.

Question: So what if everyone uses 8 party conferences?  Doesn’t that mean each user will be using a lot more bandwidth to support those 8 video feeds coming to them?

Answer: Yes, each incoming video stream does use more bandwidth.  However, the size of the video gets progressively smaller as more video feeds appear so the amount of bandwidth used per feed continues to drop.  If large conferences are the norm and it is desired to see all 8 participants, a good average total number to provision for is 3 meg. (500 K up and 2.5 meg down).

Question: Can I limit the amount of bandwidth a user can consume?

Answer: Yes, it is possible to restrict the amount of bandwidth a user may consume.  When the maximum bandwidth allowed is reached then the quality of some of the incoming video feeds with be reduced or some will not be displayed.  Those who spoke most recently will be displayed.

Question: Skype and others are free.  Why would I pay for your service?

Answer: You get what you pay for.  You don’t get these things for free.
